Roots, 175, 239; Kraen Tzler 1441, Roots: Brian of the Tributes (Boru, Borama and Boroimhe), King of the Dalcassians, then King of Munster, 976-1002, and finally usurped the High Kingship of Ireland, 1002-1014.  Killed at the Battle of Clontarf, 1014 while fighting a mixed forse of Norse and Leinstermen.  K&Q calls him Brian Boru, High King of Ireland from 1002-1014.  According to K&Q he had another son.  Teige (Terrence) who died in 1023 and apparently was succeeded by his brother, Donnchad, that year. One of Teige's descendents, som 30 generations down, was Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who married King George the VI and is the mother of Queen Elizabeth II.  Young: refers to Brian Boromhe, 940-1014, King of Munster, High King of Ireland, most famous of all Irish Kings.  Clan: O'Brien

THE GREAT DEPRESSION

 

Ours was a family with 6 children, 5 boys, and myself.  We were accustomed to being poor so i'm sure there were others that felt the blow more.

My Dad had a regular job in one of the local factories here in Athens.  He stayed with this Company 35 years.  He was ill 2 years before his death in 1949.  He was paid $1.00 for a 10 hour day.  He worked one or two days a week if he was lucky.  Some weeks, nothing at all.  He would go to the factory every morning at work time, 6:00 o'clock.  Some days, he would get to work 2 oe 3 hrs, some days, nothing.

My Mom and I took in laundry for the people that could afford it.  The boys carried papers and delivered the laundry for us.  We carried water from across the street to do the laundry and for house use.  We did the laundry with a rub board and the ironing with cast iron flat irons that we heated on the wood cook stove or the small coal heater we used for heat.

Now, some of you young ones would not know a rub board or a flat iron should one come along.  We must have done a good job with the laundry because we got all the laundry we could handle.

I have hung clothes on the closthes line when the clothes would freeze before I could get them straight and the closthes pin in, and of course, we never had enough pins.  We had to fold and double up and make do with what we had.

Now on the other hand, things were a lot cheaper then.  We didn't have no electric bill, we used kerosene lamps and our water bill was only .50 cents because we carried it across the street.  The cost for water was $1.00 if you had it in your own yard.  You could buy bag of meal for .10 cents and a sack of flour for .25 cents.  At our house we didn't have an aweful lot of different things to eat but I can't recall ever missing a dinner such as it was.  We always had bread and milk and whatever else we could get together.  Now clothes, we just didn't have very many but we kept them clean and didn't even think anything about getting any more.  We just knew there was no way.  We were doing the very best we could with what we had.

Now, for entertainment, there was a theater down town you could go to if you had a dime, which we didn't have at our house.  We didn't even have a radio, so in the Winter when the nights were so long until bedtime for us at 8:00 p.m. we would gather around the fire after supper and ask Dad to tell us how it was when he was a little boy, and he would talk for hours and we'd sit still as a mouse listening to him.  I think he enjoyed it to.

Well, I could write all night and never skim the surface.  This is just a small part of how it was at our house but we were happy.  We didn't think we were having it rough or anyhting.
